Boohoo, Fashionova, etc.

The future of fashion always seems to be in trouble. If it isn’t about people NOT shopping, it’s about people who ARE shopping. Because of the young and aware (a.k.a Millenials), the fashion industry may be due for a great change. Net-a-porter launched a new sector online called Net Sustain. Net Sustain will feature fashion related products that are environmentally friendly i.e no animal products, sustainable fabrics, and highlighting brands that adhere to sustainable practices such as Stella McCartney and Mother of Pearl just to name a few. Milennials love earth friendly business practices. This all seemed exciting to me. Whether brands are sustainable for profit or because they care makes no difference to me as long as it’s environmentally friendly. Make saving the earth a trend. I’m all for it! Then I happened upon an article talking about the fall of TOP SHOP. This comes as no surprise. I’ve heard rumors of the TOP SHOP branch in Atlanta shutting down. Them closing down wasn’t that alarming to me. In the article, it mentioned Boohoo as one a reasons for TOP SHOPS fall. Boohoo is like Fashionova; a fast fashion retailer. They crush internet sales. Brands like Charlotte Russe couldn’t compete, and shut down. Millennials also love fashionnova and Boohoo. I hope the efforts made by sustainable brands will be enough to compete with the fast fashion brands online.

FENTY COLLECTION 2019

FENTY Collection by Rihanna released May 24, 2019 in Paris, France as a pop-up store then online May 29. Not to be mistaken for her beauty line (which crushed the market with sales reaching the millions). Reviewing this collection was something I looked forward to. Fashion has always been a tricky industry to master, partially due to so many options. From my experience exclusivity, quality, and design are the driving forces behind many successful brands. RiRi’s FENTY collection is exclusive and evident in quality, but in terms of design I have to say… meh.

The overall silhouettes of the collection are reminiscent of the 1980’s power era with squared off stiff shoulders and structured cinched waist blazers. There are a few deconstructed pieces that seem to be the go-to for rookie designers striving to impress a high-end vibe out right. Voluminous sleeves were also featured, which did touch a bit on trends popular for future seasons. Summer 2019 has a more relaxed aesthetic according to trend forecasters. Clearly RiRi’s collection went against the grain not only in design, but color as well. The construction and design of FENTY COLLECTION is nothing I haven’t seen before. Was this their way of playing it safe? I must say that Rihanna’s past fashion colabs were more exciting. The blazer striped strapless dress, and even the high-heeled mules look like something FashionNova cooked up for an exclusive capsule line. I wonder if Rihanna had as much input in her fashion collection as with her beauty products. Fenty beauty was something she felt very passionate about, and even was hands on in terms of formula variety and quality. Could Fenty Collections just be another project to “ride the wave” of success drummed up by the beauty brand? If you think about it; why give the beauty line AND the clothing the same name?

Honestly, when I heard about Fenty Collection, I assumed it would be styles RiRi would wear herself. I bet she did…in 2002. The only items I thought were impressive are the sunglasses. I seriously want to splurge on at least 3 pairs. I know frameless sunglasses are nothing new, but these shades are very futuristic without the cheesy sci-fi elements. The colors are versatile and boasts cool ombre square lens.

Overall, I’d say this collection was a bit more subtle than expected. I understand minimalism and quality are trending, but designers still need to DESIGN. Even the styling could improve; blazers paired with fanny packs are nothing new. My honest opinion is 7/10 for this collection, only because I feel the accessories speak more of Rihanna’s essence. I caught a glimpse of her intimate apparel and felt the same way. Rihanna will continue to make history in music AND beauty. She’s still THE fashion icon. Her 2019 collection just needs to follow.

Sunday Post: Product Descriptions

There’s an art to writing the most searchable and top ranking product descriptions. As a fashion writer with over 7 years experience, I’ve come to understand that when it comes product descriptions. Understanding what the customers needs are, and what they could be looking for is a great help in creating written content that sells.  I wrote product descriptions recently for a client. These images represent some hot trends in women’s accessories. Here are a few samples of effective product descriptions writing.

Ready for spring? Welcome the new season with these impressive and delicate floral earrings by (brand name). Minimal style, with lovely floral elements in pink are great focal pieces for any look.  This item represents the most current trends and how versatile they can be. The light gold loops intertwined with floral ditsy petals are beautiful and chic. Wear these earring with a formal wrap dress, or casual denim and a cute button down crop top.

This is just a quick example: mention the brand, describe the item, and even give a suggestions for styling. The key is to spark imagination and even inspiration for a new style. A lot more thought goes into writing product descriptions. Anyone interesting in learning more can message me OR if you need product descriptions written, please feel free to press my Facebook line, and message me there for any inquires.

Old vs. New

When I say old vs new, I’m referring to writing  formats. Yes, I still use notebooks to write ideas and actual content first hand. My creativity comes in spontaneous spurts throughout the day. What better way to capture great ideas than with a creatively decorated  notebook? All too often, people recommend that I exclusively use my phone (or whatever electronic device) to keep track of mental notes. In no way am I anti-technology. I actually love it! Apps like Evernote are great for organizing thoughts; especially referencing. But there is something so authentic about putting pen to paper. It’s therapeutic for me. Somehow the essence of what I’m writing is transferred properly that way. I know there is no proof of this so called essence. It’s something that I can’t explain, but I relied heavily on throughout my career. Always stay true to your original methods of writing, and revert back to it from time to time.  It will help to keep you motivated ;).

Raf Simons S/S 2018 Love it!

I felt the urge to share this, (if you haven’t seen it already). Raf Simons Spring/Summer 2018 collection and fashion show is just riddled with creativity. It’s easy to see why he’s one of the most iconic designers to date. Staying relevant comes naturally to him, partially due to his own effort to keep up with the latest music trends. He also secures relationships with hot artists and musicians. This runway show features art designs from Joy Division and New Order created by Peter Saville. This is not the first time Raf Simons has collaborated with popular rock bands. He’s been doing this since the early 1990’s. He’s a club kid at heart. His knack for staying in tune with youth culture is amazing. This runway show inspired by Chinatown NY  is authentic Raf Simons. I prefer his “pure” un-colaborated fashion interpretations. I’m never satisfied with just a touch of Raf…I prefer the whole dose. Enjoy the fashion show!
